Our History

Over the years, we’ve built a story with fiber optics. Find out more about those more than three decades of Wirelink.

1985
THE BEGINNING OF EVERYTHING: TELECOMMUNICATIONS

Fortel company was founded (trading name Wirelink Telecommunications). Its field of action was the creation of telecom networks for carriers. Computing was still in its early days. The first Windows version 1.0 was released that year. Windows was not a proper operating system, but a two-dimensional interface between DOS and the user. Its features were relatively limited.

1996
BEGINNING OF THE INTERNET NETWORK OPERATION VIA DIAL-UP ACCESS

The internet service began to operate definitively, and to avoid a state monopoly of the internet in Brazil, the Ministry of Communications made public its position in favor of the worldwide network commercial exploitation in the country. The internet became the cover of magazines and even a subject in soap operas turning increasingly popular and growing at a huge rate. In 1996, large ports and network connection providers were launched in Brazil; Wirelink was part of the pioneer history of our country.

1998
BEGAN ITS ACTIVITIES AS A TELECOM SERVICE PROVIDER MCS

A Multimedia Communication Service (MCS) authorization, which is granted by the National Telecommunications Agency (Anatel), is needed to provide these telecom services. In 1998, the country already ranked 19th worldwide in number of hosts and led the podium in South America. In the American continent, it was only behind the United States and Canada.

2001
STRONG INVESTMENT IN NETWORK COVERAGE THROUGH RADIOS

Wirelink –with its innovative and pioneer DNA– invested in radio transmission when the internet was booming in Brazil. With a set of antennas, connections were capable of covering a large area, turning it possible for the internet to reach remote places.

2007
THE FIRST INTERMUNICIPAL CONNECTIONS WITH DIGITAL RADIOS

According to IBOPE/Netratings, in 2007 Brazil already had about 18 million residential internet users, but their spot was on the capitals. As a result, Wirelink expanded its active points with intermunicipal connections through digital radios to improve, expand and capitalize communications.

2008
FIRST METROPOLITAN FIBER OPTIC CONNECTIONS

Along with radio technology, Wirelink began to plot wiring routes with optical fiber in the metropolitan region of Fortaleza, Ceará.

2010
FIBER BACKBONE EXPANSION COVERING CEARÁ

Wirelink began its expansion with fiber optics, reaching thousands of kilometers that covered the entire state of Ceará.

2014
FIBER BACKBONE EXPANDED TO MAJOR CITIES IN THE NORTHEAST AND ENTERED THE NORTH REGION

Its network expansion stepped up with fiber optics, and a true explorative odyssey began by providing technology to major cities in the Northeast and North of Brazil.

2015
STATE OF THE ART AND INNOVATION WITH DWDM BACKBONE NETWORK MODERNIZATION

Any growth is pointless without innovation and technology. That’s why Wirelink invested in DWDM, a multiplexing system for multiple wavelengths, which are transmitted by a single fiber optics connection. DWDM allows for channel spacing close to wavelengths, having the capability to travel through 128 channels over distances of several thousands of kilometers with the proper amplification along the route.

2018
OPENING OF NEW POPS IN BRAZIL. IXPS APPROACH BOTH NATIONALLY AND INTERNATIONALLY, AND A PARTNERSHIP ENHANCEMENT WITH GLOBAL CARRIERS

By 2018, Wirelink had launched over 20,000 km of fiber optics and needed to invest in the robustness of its network with global partnerships, enabling customers to have high availability and redundancy across their networks and businesses.

2019
ACCESS NETWORK EXPANSION, NETWORK INTERNALIZATION, AND PRODUCT AND SERVICES INNOVATION

Wirelink –with its fully structured network and tech-ready for an expansion– invested in the development of new products and services, bringing innovations to Brazil on its own or with global partnerships, delivering robust and best-in-class solutions to its customers.

2020
THE MOST MODERN BACKBONE IN BRAZIL, A FULL DIGITAL ECOSYSTEM!

Nowadays, Wirelink operates in over 360 cities, 16 states in four regions of the country, and has offices in Fortaleza and São Paulo. There are more than 35,000 kilometers of optical fiber. The company is ready and well-structured for new challenges such as 5G and its capitalization across the Brazilian territory.
